McShane has been making and restoring church bells since 1856. When a church comes to us, they usually have one of two situations: they need a brand-new bell cast to their exact specifications, or they’re looking for a quality pre-owned bell that’s ready to hang and ring.
Both are good options. The right choice depends on your timeline, budget, and what matters most to your congregation.
Option 1: A New Custom Bell
A new cast bell is made entirely to your specifications. You choose the size, the weight, the tone, and any inscriptions or decorative details. It’s cast in bronze at our foundry in Maryland Heights, Missouri, using the same methods we’ve used for 170 years.
This is usually the right choice when:
• You’re installing a bell for the first time and need a specific size or tone
• The bell is a memorial or dedication and needs a custom inscription
• You want a bell that matches existing bells in your tower
• You have flexibility on timing — new bells require lead time

Option 2: A Pre-Owned Restored Bell
McShane buys old bells, restores them to like-new condition, and sells them to churches and institutions looking for a quality bell at a lower cost. These bells have real history behind them — some date back over a century. They’ve developed a mature, rich tone that a brand-new bell takes years to achieve.
This is usually the right choice when:
• Budget is a priority
• You need a bell sooner rather than later
• You’re replacing a lost or damaged bell and want something with character
• The historical origin of the bell adds meaning for your congregation
Every pre-owned bell we sell goes through our five-step reconditioning process. We don’t sell bells that aren’t ready to ring.

Not Sure Which Direction to Go?
That’s a common starting point. Most churches haven’t bought a bell before. We’re happy to talk through your situation and give you an honest recommendation — even if that means pointing you toward the less expensive option.
